1. The controversy over who maintains Bitcoin

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: Bitcoin Core is the main software that runs the Bitcoin network. “Core developers” are the programmers who maintain this software, proposing changes to improve its security, speed, and privacy. Because Bitcoin is decentralised, these developers don’t have absolute power, instead they suggest updates that individual users (node runners) must choose to download and run. If a group of developers tried to force a change that users didn’t like, the users could simply refuse the update, making the developers’ influence more like “informal leadership” than direct control.
  
  However, because these developers decide which technical improvements are prioritised and “vetted” for the community, they act as a vital filter for the ecosystem’s evolution. A debate that has been raging for over a year now, centres on whether the social circles and funding behind these developers are becoming too exclusive and ideologically captured. While anyone can technically contribute code, some argue that a small network of institutions now controls who gets the funding and mentorship needed to work on Bitcoin full-time, potentially steering the technology toward corporate or regulatory interests rather than its original “cypherpunk” roots of total independence. This was outlined in detail in a recent article by Hodlanaut HERE.

• Why You Should Care🚨: As alternatives to Bitcoin Core software, such as Knots, exist, node runners do have alternatives. Depending on your perspective with regards to the above argument, you may choose to run Knots instead.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: A decentralized asset that is not controlled by the parasite class, has become ever more critical. Plus, the instability in the middle east means its going cheap.

• BIP-110 - a new BIP or Bitcoin Improvement Proposal has been put forward to address some of these issues. We’ll get into that next week…

2. The Epstein Files: What We Really Know About Bitcoin and the Global Power Grid

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: The latest batch of Epstein files revealed some information around Epstein’s financial support of bitcoin developers, his ties to Blockstream (a company run by bitcoin legend Adam Back) and Epstein’s attempts to control the bitcoin network. Over the last few weeks there has been much analysis of this topic. In our most recent article we zoom out.

• Why You Should Care🚨: Can the bitcoin network in fact be controlled? Should we put our trust in the integrity of the players in this space? What attempts should we make, if any, to mitigate the ability of bad actors to control the network? All of these questions matter profoundly if we want bitcoin to remain uncensorable and decentralized.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: The good news is that bitcoin survived these nefarious attempts to hijack the network. The bad news is that its still unclear to what extent the players involved were aware of what they were doing.

3. What’s happening on Jane Street?

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: Jane Street is a secretive $20 billion trading firm that's suddenly under fire from multiple directions. Indian regulators have accused them of manipulating the Bank Nifty index through a "pump and dump" strategy, allegedly profiting by around $4.4 billion. Meanwhile, a bankruptcy lawsuit claims they had insider knowledge of Terra's collapse in 2022, with evidence suggesting they traded on confidential information and even helped trigger the depegging of UST. The firm's connection to FTX (through former employees and buying Anthropic shares) has only added to the suspicion around their practices.

• Why You Should Care🚨: This matters because Jane Street isn't just some obscure trading firm - they handle about 10% of all US equity trades and 14% of ETF trading volume. More importantly, they're one of the key "Authorized Participants" for Bitcoin ETFs like BlackRock's IBIT. These APs have special regulatory exemptions that allow them to sell ETF shares without actually owning the underlying Bitcoin first, creating what experts call a "grey window" where they can potentially influence prices while hedging their positions through futures or private OTC trades. The system was designed for orderly market-making, but it creates structural advantages that could be exploited.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: The Bitcoin market may be experiencing structural price suppression through these ETF mechanics. Traders noticed a pattern where Bitcoin would consistently drop 2-3% at 10 AM Eastern when US markets opened, a pattern that mysteriously disappeared right after the Terra lawsuit was filed, followed by a $5,000 price surge. While correlation isn't causation, this suggests that ETF plumbing might be delaying genuine price discovery. For long-term holders, this is actually bullish. If demand is real and structural compression eventually breaks, the move to the upside could be violent. But it also highlights why self-custody ("not your keys, not your coins") matters more than ever, as each intermediary layer between you and the actual asset introduces potential manipulation points.

This week as we observe global regimes increasingly lashing out in panic, we consider what it means to be a sovereign individual. The 1997 book by the same name predicted much of what we are seeing today, from the fragmentation of Canada, to the increasingly authoritarian behaviour of governments around the world as they desperately try to maintain their control over the monetary and information flow.

This week saw the release of more Epstein files, and many bitcoiners were disappointed to see Adam Back of Blockstream's name in there, along with Michael Saylor's of Strategy B, whose alleged autism seems to have shielded him from closer association with Epstein.

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: Reports highlight a massive $1 trillion Medicaid fraud case in Maine involving the Somali diaspora, showcasing systemic vulnerabilities in legacy financial monitoring and centralized systems. The scale is massive. Under a fiat monetary system where money is simply digitally “printed” there is no upper limit to this type of fraud.

• Why You Should Care🚨: Large-scale fraud in public systems drains resources that should be directed towards the public good (schools, hospitals etc.) and is subsidized by tax payers including low-income earners.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: Centralized systems are inherently corrupt. History is awash with examples of fraud and corruption under communist regimes. Bitcoin’s decentralized protocol would force accountability by ensuring that money that is contributed collectively is localized rather than centralized.

2. Alberta Independence in the Sovereign Individual

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: Alberta’s independence movement, led by groups like the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), is actively collecting signatures for a citizen-initiated referendum on secession from Canada. As of early February 2026, the petition needs 177,732 valid signatures (10% of 2023 provincial election votes) to trigger a potential vote, possibly as early as fall 2026. Organizers report strong turnout at events, though official tallies are pending. Premier Danielle Smith opposes full secession but supports Alberta’s sovereignty within Canada and facilitated the petition process.

• Why You Should Care🚨: An independent Alberta could pursue bold economic policies, including adopting sound money principles inspired by Austrian economics. Premier Danielle Smith is a known Bitcoin advocate. Separatist proposals (e.g., from APP) include a new currency backed by gold, oil, and Bitcoin for stability and inflation resistance. This aligns with her pro-freedom, anti-federal-overreach stance, potentially making Alberta a pro-Bitcoin jurisdiction of immense wealth and prosperity.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: If successful, an independent Alberta would add another sovereign entity embracing Bitcoin-friendly policies beyond El Salvador. Slowly, then suddenly.

3. More Epstein Files Released: Bitcoin Pioneers Mentioned

• The Scoop🕵️‍♂️: Newly released Epstein files mention early connections involving Adam Back and Michael Saylor. The former’s company “Blockstream” appears to have solicited (and received) investment from an Epstein affiliated company, after Epstein was convicted for procuring minors for prostitution. The latter, Saylor, was determined to be “boring” by Epstein as all he could talk about was his yacht he was taking to Cannes. Many suspect that Saylor is on the spectrum, so this squares rather accurately.

• Why You Should Care🚨: Many bitcoin start ups took money in the early days from sources that are now deemed suspect. The bigger question is around whether they were aware of this fact and proceeded regardless.

• What does this mean for bitcoin?✨: Bitcoin doesn’t care about the morals of who interacts with it, any more than a dollar bill does. The difference is that unlike fiat currencies such as the U.S. dollar, none of these players can control the bitcoin protocol.

Every so often, news ripples through the Bitcoin community that a solo miner using a small device, sometimes something like a BitAxe, has actually found a block and claimed the full reward. Screenshots get shared, people congratulate the miner, and for a brief moment, the space feels electric. These rare wins do more than just make for a good story; they remind everyone that Bitcoin does not care who you are, who you know, or how much money you have. A tiny miner humming on a shelf and a giant industrial farm both submit hashes to the same network, under the same rules, and sometimes the little one wins.

To understand why those moments feel so special, it helps to see the wider mining landscape. Most miners today participate through mining pools. A pool lets many separate miners combine their computing power so that they find blocks more regularly and share the rewards. Instead of waiting months or years for your own machine to “hit” a block, you point your hardware to the pool, submit your work, and receive small, frequent payouts based on how much power you contribute. It is like turning the wild swings of a lottery into something closer to a steady paycheck. For many individuals and most mining companies, that predictability makes mining feasible: electricity bills are steady, hardware ages, and regular income makes budgeting possible.

Large mining companies operate at a scale most home miners never see. They fill warehouses with specialized ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) machines, negotiate low-cost power deals, and invest heavily in cooling, monitoring, and optimization. Their operations provide a substantial portion of the hash rate that secures Bitcoin, helping ensure that blocks arrive roughly every 10 minutes. These companies often operate within formal regulatory frameworks, which can bring transparency and legal stability but also require them to respond to local rules, reporting requirements, and policy changes. When they point their fleets at mining pools, they create a powerful backbone for the network’s security and reliability.

Those structures, pools, and large companies naturally draw attention from regulators and observers simply because they are visible and organized. When significant hash power is concentrated in these setups, it is clear where laws may apply and where business decisions could influence how mining is conducted. That is not inherently negative; it is just part of how a maturing industry works. Pools and professional miners are crucial to Bitcoin’s infrastructure and help the network operate at a global scale.

Solo mining, though, lives in a very different emotional space. Instead of sending work to a shared coordinator, a solo miner points their hardware directly at a Bitcoin node, often one they run themselves. There is no smoothing of rewards and no periodic payout for partial work. You either find a block and receive the entire block reward plus transaction fees, or you receive nothing. The underlying math is the same, but the experience is far more intense: long stretches of silence punctuated by the remote possibility of a single, dramatic success.

Small devices like BitAxe have brought this kind of mining back within reach for regular people. These compact, efficient ASIC-based miners are not trying to rival industrial farms; they are designed so that someone at home can plug in a device, connect it to their node or a solo mining server, and meaningfully participate in securing the network. The odds of a single small miner finding a block remain tiny, but the barrier to entry is much lower. Solo mining becomes less of a pure financial bet and more of a personal experiment, a hobby, and an expression of values.

For the individual, solo mining can change the way Bitcoin feels. Instead of just holding coins in a wallet or using a service, you become part of the machinery that enforces the rules. Running a node, configuring your miner, and watching blocks propagate across your own setup turns abstract ideas like “consensus” and “proof of work” into something you can see and touch. If your solo rig is ever lucky enough to find a block, the sense of ownership is profound: your node assembled that block, your hardware performed the work, and your reward arrived with no intermediaries.

This speaks directly to Bitcoin’s philosophical roots. From its beginning, Bitcoin was designed as a system where anyone could join without permission and help enforce the rules through their own software and hardware. Solo mining, especially paired with running your own node, is one of the purest expressions of that idea. You decide which version of the Bitcoin software to run and which consensus rules you accept. In the rare moment that your miner discovers a block, you also choose which valid transactions to include. There is no pool operator shaping your block template, and no external entity filtering what you can or cannot support. It is just you, your machine, and the protocol.

On a broader level, solo mining contributes to decentralization in a quiet but meaningful way. The security of Bitcoin depends on a large total amount of hash power, which mining companies and pools provide. But the character and resilience of Bitcoin depend on how that power is distributed and who controls it. When individuals around the world run their own nodes and occasionally mine on their own, they add many small, independent centers of decision-making. Even if each solo miner’s hash rate is tiny compared to a large farm, their presence makes it harder for any single group to push the network in a direction users do not want.

Solo mining is not the right fit for everyone. Many people whose main goal is a predictable income will continue to favor mining pools or other ways of gaining exposure to Bitcoin. Most solo miners will never find a block, and anyone considering it should understand those odds clearly. But viewed as an opportunity rather than a guarantee, solo mining offers something unique: a chance to step closer to the heart of the protocol, to learn by doing, and to live out the original peer-to-peer, permissionless vision behind Bitcoin.

In that sense, pools, professional miners, and solo miners all have their place. Pools and companies deliver scale, efficiency, and industrial-grade security. Solo miners bring experimentation, education, and a living reminder that Bitcoin is still a system where individuals matter. And every time a small device like a BitAxe hits a block and the community celebrates, it reinforces a simple truth: on this network, the rules are the same for everyone, and sometimes, against all odds, anyone can win.

Why you should avoid transacting on Bitcoin exchanges where possible.

From around September 2024 a support contractor for Coinbase in India photographed up to 200 customer records daily, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and bank details, selling them for $200 each. This breach, which affected 69,461 users and exposed their financial information and Bitcoin holdings to criminals, was not publicly disclosed by Coinbase until May 2025. The incident highlights the severe security risks of Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, which create centralized databases of sensitive user information that become targets for exploitation, ultimately undermining the privacy and physical security that Bitcoin was originally designed to provide.

This is not financial, legal, or tax advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. It is simply a personal post exploring the differences between saving in gold, silver, and Bitcoin, so that people can think more clearly about how each asset fits their own situation.

Gold and silver are having their moment again, and many savers are wondering whether to ride the metals wave instead of holding Bitcoin, or even skip Bitcoin entirely and stick with what feels familiar and tangible. On the surface, it seems obvious: shiny metals you can hold versus a digital asset that lives on the internet. Humans have trusted gold and silver as money and as a store of value for a very long time, while bitcoin is still young in comparison, which naturally makes many people more comfortable with metals.

The deeper you look, though, the more bitcoin starts to resemble an upgraded version of what people like about monetary metals. Gold and silver do not have a strict supply cap; miners can always dig more out of the ground, and higher prices tend to encourage more production over time, so the supply grows in a somewhat flexible way. Bitcoin, in contrast, has a programmed issuance schedule that roughly halves the new supply every four years and stops completely at a fixed maximum number of coins, making its long‑term supply more strictly limited than that of any major metal. For someone thinking in decades, that predictable scarcity is a powerful feature, especially if the main concern is currency debasement rather than short‑term price moves.

Day‑to‑day, the differences show up in how each form of savings fits into real life.

Significant amounts of gold or silver are heavy, expensive to ship, and awkward to move across borders, so large positions usually end up sitting in vaults or custodial accounts that require trust in intermediaries. Bitcoin, by design, lets a saver move meaningful value across the world in minutes and hold it personally with nothing more than a small device and a set of keys, which is something metals simply cannot match at scale. That combination of portability and self‑custody turns savings into something that is hard to confiscate, censor, or quietly rehypothecate without the owner’s knowledge.

Even the question of “Is it real?” plays out differently.

With metals, verifying purity at scale requires assays, trusted refiners, or reputable vaults, and there is always a lingering concern about fakes or whether the same bar has multiple paper claims on it. Bitcoin shifts the trust model away from warehouses and paper to math and open networks, with a public ledger that allows anyone to verify total supply and ownership transfers without needing to trust a specific institution. For savers who have seen banking crises, capital controls, or broken promises from institutions, transparency can be as comforting as the weight of a gold coin.

The trade‑offs, however, cannot be ignored. Over long horizons, bitcoin has massively outperformed gold in terms of total return, which is why long‑term savers who learned about it early have been so vocal about its role as a savings asset. But that outperformance came with violent drawdowns and periods where bitcoin behaved more like a high‑beta tech stock than a defensive “crisis hedge.” Gold, and to a lesser degree silver, tends to move less and sometimes hold their value better in classic risk‑off panics, even though silver itself can be extremely volatile in bursts and can swing sharply in both directions.

So, when someone who already saves in metals is tempted to abandon bitcoin because gold and silver are running, it helps to think in roles rather than winners. In this view, metals are the conservative base: time‑tested, tangible, relatively steady in deep crises, but with elastic supply and real‑world frictions. Bitcoin is the hard‑capped, digital layer on top of that: stronger in scarcity, portability, and verifiability, and historically much more powerful for growing purchasing power over long stretches, but with sharper drawdowns and ongoing regulatory and technological uncertainty. Framed that way, metals remain excellent for preserving what already exists, while bitcoin is better seen as the aggressive long‑term savings vehicle for the portion of wealth where someone is willing to accept volatility in exchange for those structural advantages.

To really understand Bitcoin as a savings asset, it helps to step back and study the history of money itself; specifically, how societies moved from shells and salt to gold and silver, then to paper, and now to digital systems. Learning why gold and silver emerged as monetary metals, how their scarcity and physical properties made them trusted stores of value, and how modern fiat currencies changed the game gives context for what bitcoin is trying to solve. Without that background, Bitcoin can look like a speculative tech toy; with it, you can see it as another chapter in the evolution of hard assets, sitting alongside metals rather than replacing them overnight.

👩‍💼 Women in Bitcoin

PROBLEM: The World Bank estimates that 1.4bn people (mostly women) are unbanked

SOLUTION: A trustless for of money that does not require an intermediary — Bitcoin.

Approximately 56% of the unbanked are women. This is largely due to cultural and societal issues. Bitcoin provides a neat solution for these women. They can create a bitcoin address by simply rolling dice to come up with a “Private Key” and payments can be made directly to this address. In order to move funds an internet connection is required, but if you are simply HODLing (holding your bitcoin and not selling it) then it provides the perfect solution!
