Eighteen months ago, we interviewed Alana Mediavilla, the Director and Producer of the award-winning documentary Dirty Coin. At that time, she was approximately six months into a project that would become not only one of the defining documentaries on Bitcoin mining, but also a film capturing an era that stretches from the creation of the internet to the advent of sound money.
Alana Mediavilla founded her production company ‘Filmkik’ over 10 years ago and has been producing videos for Silicon Valley companies throughout this time. She has had an interest in bitcoin since 2017, but increasingly she came to realise the importance of bitcoin in protecting individual and societal freedoms throughout the world. Having observed some of the rhetoric around the environmental damage that bitcoin mining was allegedly causing, she decided to investigate further.
The result is the documentary ‘Dirty Coin’ which held its premiere at the Bitcoin Film Festival in Warsaw, 20th April 2024, where it won the award for best movie. The film explores bitcoin mining, one of its underlying technologies of bitcoin's ‘proof-of-work’, and grid financing.
The film separates fact, from fiction and provides a window into what bitcoin mining is and its impact.
