If you don’t hang out on Bitcoin Twitter, it may not be clear why this is a big deal, but for those in the Bitcoin community this signals a clear shift away from centralised Big Tech platforms, to decentralised and censorship resistant protocols like Nostr.
Why you should care🚨: While Twitter’s respect for free speech has improved significantly over the last year since being purchased by Elon, the platform is still actively censoring users by throttling posts based on content Elon does not like (anything referencing Nostr or Substack for example) and the company CEO Linda Yaccarino has openly stated that users will be shadow-banned under their “freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach” policy.
Matt has been a vocal advocate for protocols such as Nostr, which allow you to broadcast messages to multiple relays, rendering it impossible to censorship speech. By protecting speech through protocols rather than relying on the benevolence of a given distribution platform, free-speech is enforced by code, not humans.
