📈 Trending Topics in the News
1. Biden’s Admin Vetoes Repeal of SAB 121
The Scoop🕵️♂️: SAB 121, also known as the "Statement on Auditing Standards No. 121: Audit Risk and Materiality in Conducting an Audit," is an auditing standard issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). This standard provides guidance to auditors on how to assess audit risk and materiality in conducting an audit. The standard had a significant impact on highly regulated US firms wishing to hold bitcoin and crypto.
The Senate passed a CRA overturning the standard. However the Biden administration vetoed the bill on Friday 31st May.Why you should care🚨: Arguably you shouldn’t, because bitcoin is best held in self-custody, not on an exchange or with a bank. However, for the US economy this is a blow as it stymies the industry and encourages firms to locate their activities in less capricious jurisdictions such as the Middle East.
Here is the full statement put out by Biden’s team:
2. Nayib Bukele, El Salvador
The Scoop🕵️♂️: President Bukele of El Salvador was sworn in for a second term. You can watch the swearing in here.
Why you should care🚨: El Salvador was the first country in the world to make Bitcoin legal tender. While the West is increasingly missing the boat with Bitcoin, Bukele has successfully revived the Salvadoran economy and attracted masses of tourists and investors including Google. El Salvador is sparking interest from other Latam countries who want to learn from their success and building partnerships with the Middle East. Moreover, Bukele has brought crime levels down so low that El Salvador is now statistically safer than Canada 🇨🇦.
The event was attended by several world leaders including the Honduran President Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, and Argentinian President Javier Milei as well as US media and politicians.
🌎 The global power bases are shifting.
🚀 Founders
Hannah Rosenberg and her husband Erik are co-founders of Velas Commerce, a Bitcoin and Lightning Software Development company. In this week’s edition of their newsletter they pose the following question:
“AI is disrupting the web economy: Bitcoin's business potential
Directing traffic to targeted websites and grabbing users' attention are the business foundations of much of the current internet. Pay per click and web advertising are no doubt taking an increasing hit as web traffic moves to AI generated summaries and question and answer chats. So how will businesses get paid for providing the content that these AI agents consume and reproduce for users?”
