1. Anonymous Donor Pays $500,000 in Bitcoin to Julian Assange
The Scoop🕵️♂️: Julian Assange travelled from Belmash Prison in the UK where he had been held for several years by the UK government awaiting extradition to the US to face charges of espionage, to Saipan, a US territory where he entered his guilty plea. The Australian government arranged for his transportation via chartered jet, and did not allow him to travel on a commercial airline. As such, Assange incurred a debt of $520,000 to the Australian government.
A funding campaign was quickly launched by the Bitcoin community, and by the time Assange had landed the funds to pay his debt has been covered, mostly by a Bitcoin whale who donated 8 Bitcoin to fund his transportation.Why you should care🚨: Wikileaks and Julian Assange performed a huge service in support of journalism by exposing crimes committed by the US administration. He should never had been charged for exposing those crimes. Assange is suffering from heart issues and would have died had he stayed in the UK prison, so he had no choice but to take the plea. However, the fact that he had to plead guilty now sets a terrible precent, as any journalist who exposes crimes by the US state risks being charged with espionage as well.

2. Yet Another Data Breach - the Dangers of KYC
The Scoop🕵️♂️: We are increasingly being asked to “verify” our identity in order to access frivolous services such as social media sites, in addition to everything from banking to car hire. If it is not yet obvious to you, the companies handling this sensitive data, have a complete inability to keep it secure, exposing people’s personal information, including home addresses to hackers and criminals everywhere.
Why you should care🚨: Unless you want to spend your life trying to recoup money stolen from your bank, or the theft of your very identity, it behooves you to push back forcefully against this excessive and growing “KYC” or “Know Your Customer” encroachment. Bitcoin provides a useful method to “be your own bank” which will become increasingly viable for most people as adoption continues to grow. Nostr provides you with an effective way to engage with social media, without the need for identify verification, nor the risk of “deplatforming”.
