The University of Calgary recently hosted a numismatic symposium “Money, War and More”and were kind enough to invite our founder, Krista Edmunds, to speak at the event.

1. Julian Assange
The Scoop🕵️♂️: Julian Assange, an Australian journalist has been sitting in Belmarsh prison in the UK for 5 years. He has not been charged with any crime. The US is looking to extradite him to face charges of espionage for revealing the alleged war crimes of the US administration. If extradited he could face 175 years in prison. This is the first time a publisher has been charged with that crime. Last week, at the White House correspondents dinner, current President Joe Biden stated: “Journalism is not a crime, not here, not there, not anywhere in the World”. He seem unaware that his administration is looking to extradite Assange…for journalism.
Why you should care🚨: It is the job of journalists to hold power to account. If we no longer have a free press, then our collective freedom is lost. Organisations globally from Amnesty International to Al Jazeera have condemned the US’s continued persecution of Assange. His next extradition appeal hearing is due to be held 20th May. 2. The Founders of Samourai Wallet Arrested
The Scoop🕵️♂️: The founders of Samourai Wallet, Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill, have been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. 🚨 The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that Samourai Wallet facilitated over $2 billion in unlawful transactions, including laundering more than $100 million in criminal proceeds. Their arrest is part of the ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to crack down on crypto mixing services used for illicit activities.
Why you should care🚨: The charges against the Samourai Wallet founders appear to overlook key facts, raising questions about the case's legitimacy. 🚨 Despite accusations of facilitating over $2 billion in unlawful transactions, Samourai Wallet never held or transmitted user funds. Instead, it operated as a decentralised service, allowing users to manage their funds independently. 📉 The arrest of its founders may signal a troubling shift in the approach to crypto regulation, potentially criminalising financial privacy and innovation without due consideration of the facts.
💼 Women in Business
A recent article by Libby (Flo Montoya’s alter ego - see interview below) in Consensus Magazine highlights the empowering potential of Bitcoin for women, especially as it relates to financial independence. It emphasises that historically, women have tended to be savers rather than investors, due to factors like a lack of financial literacy, cultural norms, and complex financial markets.
